Story regarding the song Joshua

The previous post was only explaining the character Joshua and the place Jericho.
Now, here's the story that sets the background for the song we are practising - Joshua.

After Moses died, God selected Joshua as the new leader of the Children of Israel. Joshua had faithfully served God and trusted Him completely. Forty years earlier, he and Caleb had been the only two of twelve spies who had been ready to enter the Promised Land. The other ten were too frightened by what they saw. Because of their unbelief, an entire generation of Israelites died wandering in the wilderness. But with Joshua in charge, things would be different this time around.

As they camped near the Jordan River, God gave Joshua some final instructions,

“I have given you the land from the Mediterranean Sea to the Euphrates River, and from the wilderness to Lebanon. All this land belongs to the Children of Israel according to my Word. No one will be able to stand against you. As I was with Moses, I am with you. I will never leave you or forget you.”

And then God gave Joshua the secret to success,

“Be strong and courageous. Do not forget any of my commandments. Do not turn to the right or left and you will prosper. Keep speaking my Words and meditate on them night and day and you will have success in everything you do!”

Confident God was in charge, Joshua sent two spies to investigate Jericho, the first city they would face. They entered Jericho and stayed at the home of a prostitute named Rahab.

Now everyone in Jericho was on pins and needles. They knew that God had promised the land to the Israelites and it wouldn’t be long before they showed up to take it. So when the King of Jericho heard that there were spies in Jericho, he immediately sent his guards to Rahab’s home.

Rahab told the guards that the spies had already left and if they hurried, they could catch up with them. But actually she hid them on her roof.

“We have heard of all the great the things God has done for you and how He brought the Children of Israel out of Egypt. All of Jericho is afraid and knows that we cannot fight against God,” said Rahab. “Please promise me that when Jericho is taken, you will save me and my family.”

The spies agreed.

“Tie this red cord in your window. Anyone within this house will be protected,” said the spies.

They climbed down a rope from her window near the wall. After hiding a few days, they returned to the Israelite camp and reported everything to Joshua.

Armed with his faith in God, Joshua marched his army across the Jordan River, which parted to allow them to cross on dry ground.

Now Jericho was a formidable city with huge thick walls. After wandering in the wilderness, the Israelites were not prepared to attack such a city with conventional weapons. So instead, God gave Joshua a supernatural plan that would give them the victory.

Early in the morning the army lined up and marched around the city carrying the ark. The priests blew their trumpets, but nobody spoke a word.

Up on the battlements, the King of Jericho watched the Israelites do this for six days. Each morning the army marched once around, the priests blew the trumpets, but nobody said a word.

“What are they doing?” asked the King. “They have no siege engines and no way to breach our walls!”

Jericho’s defenders started laughing at the Israelites. But the laughter didn’t last very long.

On the seventh day, the Israelite army marched around the wall as before. The priests blew their trumpets and the people said nothing. They did it again. And then they marched around it four more times. As they started marching the seventh time around, Joshua commanded the people to shout because God had given them the city.

So the priests blew their trumpets and the entire army shouted out praises to God. As they lifted their voices in victory, the walls came tumbling down, taking most of Jericho’s defenders with it. The Israelites charged through the debris and captured the city.

Hopefully this can imply some more accurate images in your brain.
And, enjoy the song~

About Joshua & Jericho

Joshua, in the Bible.

1 Central figure of the book of Joshua.

2 High priest associated with Zerubbabel in rebuilding the Temple.

3 Owner of the field where the Ark of the Covenant stood. d

4 In Second Kings, governor of Jerusalem.

5 Hebrew name for Jesus of Nazareth.

Leader of the Israelite tribes after the death of Moses. According to the biblical book of Joshua, Joshua led the people of Israel westward across the Jordan River to invade Canaan**. Under his leadership the Israelites conquered the Canaanites and gained control of the Promised Land. The book begins by recounting the battles, including the famous demolition of the walls of Jericho. Joshua then divides Canaan among the 12 tribes of Israel, makes his farewell speech, and dies. The book was compiled much later than the events described, perhaps during the Babylonian Exile in the 6th century BC.

Jericho

Town (pop., 1997: 14,674), West Bank territory. Inhabited since c. 9000 BC, it is famous in biblical tradition as the first town attacked by the Israelites under Joshua after they crossed the Jordan River. It was abandoned or destroyed several times and rebuilt in the same area. Captured by the British in 1918, it became part of the British mandate of Palestine. Incorporated into Jordan in 1950, it became the site of two huge camps of Arab refugees following the first Arab-Israeli war (1948). In the Six-Day War (1967), the town was occupied by Israel, and much of the refugee population was dispersed. In 1994 it was turned over to the Palestinian Authority under an Israeli-Palestinian self-rule agreement.

Canaan

An ancient region made up of Palestine or the part of it between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. In the Bible it is the Promised Land of the Israelites.

An ancient country in southwestern Asia on the east coast of the Mediterranean; a place of pilgrimage for Christianity and Islam and Judaism
Synonyms: Palestine, Holy Land, Promised Land

Arwin Tan & Sharon

What I recall from the talk is as listed below:-
1. What is the key towards choir management?
- Patience. Learning takes time, as no difference with vocal music.
- No Anger, no frustration. Nobody should fight frustration with frustration, fire with fire. Pour in warmth when they are cold. Cool them down when there are fights.
- Lots of laughters
- Lots of learning and teaching for satisfaction. PPL don't come here just for friendships. Choir members ought to be commited to attendancy as much as the commitment towards music itself. Friendship is not the consideration of joining a society.
- The members are lead by master, do revise yourself every time.
2. What is the techniques to high notes, and low tones?
- Think. Think high when you sing low notes. Press your notes when you sing high notes.
- Vertical singing. Use your belly not your throat. Simple way of checking is turning your head around, it should not affect your singing.
3. What is the beauty of accapella?
- Continuous melody. With different ppl breathing at different place you creates continuous meloday, just relaxes ppl after the piece.
- Beautiful Chords produced by ppl
4. How do you help "tone deaf"?
- Should take "tone deaf" a better defination, a person who needs more patience, care and love. Starts with the note that he/she is capable to sing. Patience, patience, paatiieeencccceeee.
- If he/ she really cannot do it. Let them service other matters and allow other extra sessions for them.
- Let members help too.
5. How do you breath?
- Belly breath. Voice with your belly.
6. How do you produce nice chords?
- Never accept wrong notes. Do not get angry with choir members but lead them to the right position.
- Separate learning level.
Level 1 - notes learning.
Level 2 - listening with combination of parts, bass & alto/ tenor & bass...
Level 3 - merging & fine tuning

The Lion King 狮子王

The Lion King

How to voice?

You use your breath, feel the air while you breeth.
Feel it through "wen xiang". The voice as if vibrated through there.
Connect it with your 'Sheng Dai'. There you go for the first step. You got a sound.
The problem:-
1. you're still using your throat. (the sound came from your throat)
2. you couldn't combine much with your "sheng dai"
3. your position is not high enough.
4. your "kou qiang" is too much.
5. "tan qi" not enough.
How?
Practise, differenciate and analyze different way of voicing.
Noticing that the smallest volumn you can make.
Technique:-
voice a sound upside down.
Sing something. Let go, relax yourself totally, sing it out.
Remember the feel, which is the position of your voice, the breeth, the way.
Then try stand and do it with the same way you did. It helps.

Please do pose your comment. Thank you for sharing.
