JAPANESE KOTO MUSIC CONCERT

Japanese Koto Music Concert
- 350 Years of Tradition Flows Toward The Future -

by
Sawai Hikaru, Sawai Kazue & Sawai Koto Orchestra

It was about 350 years ago when the master Yatsuhashi Kengyo innovated a totally different music using KOTO, which had been used as a minor instrument for a long period of time since it came over to Japan from China about 1500 years ago.
After the "musical revolution" triggered by master Yatsuhashi, KOTO became a very important and indispensible instrument in Japanese music. Many musicians have composed and played KOTO music by adding new elements and different ideas on it until today. Classical masterpieces are still admired as Japanese traditional music and at the same time many contemporary pieces using KOTO attract the heard of music fans not only in Japan but also all over the world.
In this KOTO music concert, the best KOTO ensemble in Japan, "Sawai Koto Academy of Music", with Sawai Hikaru and Sawai Kazue will play classical masterpieces as well as contemporary pieces. You will be overwelmed at the dynamic sound created by more than 10 KOTOs on the stage and amused with the subtle and elegant sound.

World Festival Choir

The World Festival Choir was originally formed in 1984 by Bjorn E. Simensen, then director of the Symphony Orchestra in Gothenborg, Sweden, and by Jan Jensen, then Director of the Vestfold County Choral and Music Association in Norway. First known as the Norwegian Festival Choir, the groups initial goal was to build on the potential of 120 singers to evolve a choir capable of a festival performance of Händel's Messiah to mark the tricentennial of the composer's birth the following year, in Gothenburg. Response outstripped expectation: at the premiere performance in January 1985 under the direction of Charles Farncombe, the Choir was 2500 voices strong and ovations and engagements to sing elsewhere followed.

The group was bored by the simple fare available in the studios, for this was an era dominated by pop and early rock. [read more..]
